Rainy day wedding of Debbie-Lyn Potgieter and Sven Wollner at Lake de la Vie in Port Elizabeth.
I have been friends with Debbie-Lyn Potgieter for 9 years to the day of her wedding, and I am very blessed to have been a part of this most special occasion. She has always believed in true love, waiting for Mr Right to come along and sweep her of her feet. Enters Sven Wollner…
Settled in Cape Town, Debbie & Sven decided to have their wedding ceremony in Debbie’s hometown of Port Elizabeth, in the lovely setting of the Lake de la Vie country estate. As suggested by the name, the venue is nestled between a lake and forest in the Royalston Residential Estate and Private Wildlife Reserve. The couple wanted a venue that would reflect their love for nature and all things homegrown, as they dream of someday living on a small-holding of their own. In fact, Sven proposed under a windmill (more popularly known in Afrikaans as a “windpomp”), and this symbol of the South African landscape became one of the main design elements for the day. The iconic wire windmill is featured as part of the center pieces on the table settings and as a cake topper; and used in print on the invitations, gift box and napkin rings. To compliment the windmill the rustic theme included hessian overlays, succulents and the national flower: the protea. Gilded plates, golden seals and strings of shimmering fairy lights balanced the rustic elements with elegance. I loved the DIY tree of photographs of loved ones that could not be with them for their big day, and a candle was lit in remembrance of those they still hold dear. The most important of these was surely Sven’s late mom, in whose honour they will be changing their surname to Wilson. Coming from Scottish decent, they also included her clan tartan on the garter and arranged for a bagpipe player to lead the party from the chapel. As it was raining the lass was forced to play inside the structure, the notes reverberating of the walls to create a sound that was truly hauntingly beautiful.
Debbie’s wedding dress from Bridal Flair was a perfect fit, her form a silhouette of gracefulness, and her back elegantly revealed through layers of lace and beading. A single protea encircled by green foliage and white “Star of Bethlehem” flowers made for a simple but striking bouquet.
They say that it is good luck to have rain on your wedding day, and if this rings true Debbie & Sven will be the luckiest couple ever!
